âWhereâs Stéphanie?â Dominiqueâs mother asked.
âSheâs not here, Maman. Youâll have to make do with just me tonight.â
âIs everything all right?â
Decades in politics hadnât taught Dominique how to hide her emotions from her own mother. âNot really, but it will be.â At least she hoped it would be. âDonât tell Papa, okay? I donât want him getting his hopes up.â
âCome on, Domi, give your father a bit more credit than that. Heâs grown fond of Stéphanie in his own way. Just like me, he wants you to be happy.â
âHe has a funny way of showing it sometimes.â
Her mother shook her head. âYou have to be willing to see it.â
âYou canât deny he treats Stéphanie differently than he did Philippe. He has never invited her for lunch at the Saint-James or suggested they do some clay shooting together.â Dominique had to admit that even the notion of the two of them going off with a pair of hunting shotguns seemed ridiculous.
âMaybe because he knows Stephanie would not enjoy either of these activities.â
âYou might be right about that.â Dominique sighed. This was her mother sitting next to her. For once, for the few minutes before her father arrived, she could let her guard down. âThings are not good between us. She has left the Elysée. Sheâs staying with friends. I canât be certain sheâll come back.â
âSteph adores you, Domi. Sheâll come back.â
âSheâs not cut out for the life Iâm giving her. Perhaps that was part of the attraction all along, because sheâs so different from everyone I know. Sometimes I feel like Iâm holding her back, that Iâm keeping her in a cage. Itâs not easy being first lady and not everyone wants to do it.â Dominique wondered whether Solange had called Steph yet. And whether it would make a difference if they talked.
âIt takes sacrifice, but as long as you know why youâre making the sacrifice, and you stand behind those reasons, itâs not that much of a hardship. Steph is a tough cookie.â
âI hope youâre right.â Dominique rolled her head back to release some tension from her shoulders. âI hope youâre in the mood for a good old MLR father-daughter debate tonight. Itâs not going to be easy to convince papa that this bill is a good thing.â
âIâve thought about it.â Her mother looked at Dominique intently. âYou should play the sentimental card. Talk about Lisa and Didier. He really doesnât have any rational arguments against this bill, only political ones.â
âWeâll see about that.â
A split second later, the atmosphere in the room changed as Xavier Laroche waltzed in. âHere she is,â he said. âThe greatest president this nation has ever seen.â He planted his hands on the sides of Dominiqueâs arms and kissed her on both cheeks. âAnd what a sight for old, sore eyes she is as well.â He sat down in his chair, the way he had done all of Dominiqueâs life, and looked at her. âAny news from the Elysée?â he asked.
âAs if you donât know all that goes on already.
